Via Alpina

Hiking the Via Alpina across Switzerland.

The Via Alpina is a grand hiking trail that crosses Switzerland from east to west, climbing 14 alpine passes and stretching 390km.

About the route

The classic Via Alpina is a network of long-distance hiking trails across Europe’s eight alpine countries, traversing over 5 000 km. It was created to encourage more movement between the alps and to share cultural heritage unique to this mountain habitat.

Soninke has been selected as this year’s Via Alpina Explorer for Switzerland. This red route climbs 14 alpine passes along the way, covering a total of 260 km and ascending over 16 000 m.

The journey begins in a small city in the east of canton St. Gallen and will track west, climbing the towering Klausenpass, trekking across the Bernese Alps, and finally finish in Kandersteg.
